development

After some feedback from Simon, the design was made slightly more legible as a whole series and taking more inspiration form the legibility aspect of modernism as a whole. Taking inspiration from the experimental Jetsetters poster series and they take on a layout and contemporary take on typography. The idea brought forward is a story idea in that the three posters are to transform into a more postmodernist view on legibility in that it is going to be cluttered and less legible.

During the development, there were some problems with creating a layout that flowed and was readable. but at the same time showcasing the three different stages in the poster series, going from the modernist take on contemporary design into the postmodern take.
The idea based on a mix of the film reel idea and the story based idea in that the three posters are to be made in a sequence reminiscent of storytelling. to it is to go from a crowded to lighter and more modernist in terms of negative space.
Taking inspiration of the experimental jetsetters typographic work. Using the lines to showcase the many different genres you can view at the festival. the lines also create a lighter feel of the poster.

Attempted this, it is horrible. It is way too heavy.

In order to channel the modernist take on this poster series, there had to be a lot of negative space.  so in the first one, the typography is deliberately smaller as to create the negative space, in addition, the layout is based on starting with the left-aligned typography, such as Jan Tschichold talks about in his book where he writes about the new typography wave. The concept is broken because the type does not follow the horizontal line but rather snakes around the frame.

I had a chat with Pat and he brought to attention that this layout created a divided layout in that it looks to be separated into two A2's.

For the middle tier poster, it is important that it is some were in-between the two others so enlarging the typography slightly creates a more covered design. The initial idea for it was to make it more difficult to read but still in the right order. In order to make it convey the meaning of the poster, the layout had to be changed after some feedback from my peers so you read from left and around the poster.

In the exploration part of the project, there were made several attempts to make the poster change the look of the poster in that there was some attempt to have all the type in black but that created a heavy design that was off balance and lumpy.

The design was also made inverted but when the test was printed out the white lines became very faint and that way was illegible.

After a feedback session, someone suggested lighting the design by using screen grabs from films in the large glyphs. By doing this the audience can get a quick view into some of the films shown.
In the same crit, Simon said that the postmodern poster could do with being moved off its axis as to create more movement within the poster. There was also feedback to have the rhythm of the text the same way as the two others, by that starting from the left and snaking around from there.

The most important part of this brief was that the posters would work for the broad audience and the wide range of films showcased at the festival as the brief states.
