Proposal text

 What is your theme/subject?
How can the branding and advertisement lead a person into buying something that is universally known is not good for them. How does this put the designer in an ethical dilemma?

What does it mean?
What factors are important?
How do laws and social norms affect people's judgment of products? How are the laws of marketing across several countries and how do people work around it.

Does your proposal have a working title?
The project could be called “breaking the habit”.

Is it named after your theme, do have a question in mind...
The working title is based on the idea that society is promoting people to stop bad habits, whilst the companies that sell them aim to sell their stuff.

Why are you drawn to your theme/subject?
I was drawn to it because it touches on a subject that affects lots of people and  I would like to make a change or at least inform people about the issues with the marketing of products.

How does it link to Graphic Design - your practice? How does it link to your personal interests?
How can type colour and simple advertisements trick lure a person into buying something.

What is its historical context?
Is this an old/new concept? How did it come about? Is it tied to specific eras/places/people?
Historical advertisements
1. July 1975 ban of alcohol advertises with alcohol percentage over 2,5 in Norway

Are there any particular case studies you would like to discuss?
Designers / design, events, political movements, places?
smoking
drinking
changes in the packaging of cigarettes
Smoking advertisement ban

I would like to look into the smoking and alcohol consumption of these countries because I come from Norway, live in the UK and Andorra is on top of the list of the number of smokers per capita and is in the top ten for alcohol consumption.

The laws put in places that the industries had to change the packaging and advertisements.

Are there specific texts you will be used to underpin your discussion?
Theories, cultural phenomena, writers, articles...?
Lucienne Roberts
Helsedirketoratet, the rules, and regulation and why in Norway.
the lack of efficiency of the rebrand of cigarettes.

Ideas
Create alternative packaging for said items to standardize them, as to deter the consumers to buy them? This in reference to the idea of the uniform cigarette packaging, but rather design them to deter the target audience, as there are some people that probably would never stop drinking, smoking, consuming sweets.

Flip it around and try to make the most commercial branding for cigarettes and smoking. Embrace the health issues and go for consumerism, based on the theory that people that have started habits are unlikely to break them.

Create advertisements aimed at people struggling with a specific addiction. make the adverts more personal, as they do with drunk driving. as to deter you, people tend to care more about how they affect people around them, so aiming at showcasing alternative realities.

a publication comparing said advertisements and packaging of the elements throughout history.
